Ngorongoro Crater Guide

A guide to the Ngorongoro Crater on the Northern Circuit — the wildlife-rich caldera most travellers pair with the Serengeti, and how it fits a wider Tanzania safari.

·Updated Jun 20262 min read·1 sections
The short version
  • The Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera with one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
  • It sits between Arusha and the Serengeti, so it slots naturally into a drive-in itinerary.
  • A half-day on the crater floor is usually enough to see an extraordinary range of animals.

Why it pairs so well with the Serengeti

The Ngorongoro Crater is the natural companion to a Serengeti safari: it lies on the road in from Arusha, offers a completely different landscape — a high-walled caldera rather than open plains — and packs an astonishing density of wildlife onto its floor, including a good chance of black rhino.

Most Northern Circuit itineraries spend a night on the crater rim and descend for a morning game drive before continuing to the Serengeti, or on the way back. This Phase 1 stub will grow into a full guide in Phase 2.
